Exceed Expectations
This next article is part of an ongoing series here at TSB Magazine called The Success Principles. The series is based on the 64 principles laid out by Jack Canfield in his course of the same name. If youre new, I always suggest starting any series from the beginning.
Principle 24: Exceed Expectations
This next principle is one that I have tried to consistently implement over the last year. I have actually gotten to the point where I refuse to half ass anything… sometimes even to a fault.
But Canfield explains:
Are you someone who consistently does the extra mile and routinely over delivers on your promises? It’s rare these days, but it’s the hallmark of high achievers who know that exceeding expectations helps you stand above the crowd. Almost by force of habit, successful people simply do more. As a result, they experience not only greater financial rewards for their extra efforts but also a personal transformation, becoming more self-confident, more self reliant, and more influential with those around them.
I am going to use a recent example of ours in which we practiced this principle:
When Mike Stoute and I decided to hold our first Mansformation Retreat last August we made a pack with each other that we were going to go above and beyond what was being offered by anyone else in the industry.
We knew that we could probably have hosted a typical “pua style” boot camp close by in NYC, charge upwards of $2000 a person, and everyone in attendance would have went home happy. But with TSB Magazine’s name on the line… we wanted to produce something memorable, something truly special. We wanted to exceed all expectations of what a boot camp could be.
This was the attitude we brought with us from the start. We wanted to show all of the attendees the time of their life, while charging less than anyone else in the industry was charging. And we wanted to pack as much value into the three days as humanly possible.
We priced the weekend well below industry standard. And put a twist on it by holding the weekend seminar in the Dominican Republic. Not only that… but instead of having attendees rent hotel rooms we rented one large Kingpin villa right on the water for them all to stay at. And we included all meals, and had unlimited alcohol available at the villa.
Having been to a couple seminars we knew that industry standard was to give out a three ring binder with some pages of pre-written notes. Instead we had 400 page books professionally printed and bound just for the weekend. We knew that the guys in attendance would be interested in the guys we learned from.. so we had our entire library of community books, CDs, and DVDs available to view on any of the big screen TVs throughout the villa.
We knew that life changing experiences do not come solely from a couple guys lecturing all weekend, so we created an environment where we could not only discuss the topics at hand, but also could practice what we’ve learned immediately. It was no surprise that nearly all of the students got laid the first night of the retreat.
We also knew that life changing experiences are about more than “chasing girls” so we booked a white water rafting trip. This trip alone would have made the whole weekend worth while as we plummeted down roaring rapids, filled with several near death experiences.
The results?
Everyone went home happy. Both Mike Stoute and I had personal transformations in the realization that we were not only capable of holding a retreat weekend, but that we were capable of creating what surely will go down as one of the most creative, unique, and memorable PUA boot camps of all time. If you don’t believe me, hear it from one of the attendees.
Exceeding expectations leads to massive word of mouth period.
Last month, after much convincing I finally read Tim Ferriss’s book The Four Hour Work Week. While I figured the book would clarify of few things I already knew, I didn’t have high expectations for the book even after reading many positive reviews.
To say that the book exceeded my expectations would be an understatement. The book over delivered in ways that business books seldom do. It not only gave the theory behind it, but it gave useful, practical applications that you could begin immediately. Tim also filled the book with valuable resources to supplement the knowledge he was presenting.
How did exceeding expectations help Tim?
For one, the book went on to be a best seller. And Tim has gained the trust of millions of people who will surely purchase his next book without having to even hear the title.
Authors in the seduction niche offer me money every day to promote their products. I usually decline. On the other hand, since reading Tim’s bookI have mentioned it on this site at least a dozen times. Free publicity for Tim as I have nothing to gain for promoting his book. All because he exceeded my expectations.
If you haven’t read the book and have any sort of entrepreneurial interest I highly suggest you check it out.
