The latest politician to join Tinder

Hint: It’s not Donald Trump

Political organizations in America have turned to Tinder to advertise candidates and issues, and users have been using dating apps to promote their favorite candidates. British Prime Minister David Cameron is the latest high profile politician to enter the Tinder fray (as an advertiser, not as an actual user). Here are a few things to know:

1. He’s met with multiple media companies too

According to this article in Newsweek:

Cameron met with representatives of Facebook, Twitter, Google, Buzzfeed and Tinder last week in an attempt to find new ways to connect with young voters. An estimated 79 percent of Tinder’s 50 million users are categorized by Comscore as millennials (18-34 years of age).

The idea with Tinder is that Cameron will place adverts that resemble dating profiles as part of the electoral registration drive.

2. The upcoming Brexit vote is part of his motivation

According to this article in The New York Times:

Opinion polls and political analysts suggest that up to two-thirds of Britons younger than 25 prefer to remain in the European Union, and the government wants to do all it can to get them to the polls on June 23, since that age group is less likely to bother to vote than those older than 45, who tend to favor the British exit, or “Brexit.”

3. It’s similar to the Tinder-hosted ‘Swipe the Vote’

According to this article in The Telegraph:

This isn’t the first time Tinder has been involved in the political process. In the US, the dating app launched a campaign called “Swipe the Vote” at the end of March, designed to convince users to vote by getting them to swipe left or right to the “hottest issues” in the presidential election.

Swipe the Vote asks users whether they agree or disagree with ten issues key to the race and then matches them with a presidential candidate. Once they have matched, it links them to candidates’ proposed policies and a way to register to vote.

“After all, millennials should play a big role in deciding who our next president is,” said Tinder.
