Research Says You Might Feel Better When You Spend More on Your Food
If you balk at the idea of spending a lot of money on your food you might want to think again. Some new research has found that people who spend more money on their food are more likely to feel better after eating, even when they eat the same amount as someone who is paying less for their food.
This research was published in the journal BMC Nutrition, and was?led by Brian Wansink, PhD, of Cornell University and Ozge Sigirci of Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey. They conducted the experiment over a two week period at an Italian restaurant in New York.
The researchers handed out one of two fliers to 139 random people passing by that had to do with the buffet in the restaurant. One of the fliers advertised an?$8 all-you-can-eat buffet between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., while the other flier offered the same deal but were told that the meal would be 50 percent off.
Then they let the people come in and use their deal, and after eating they were surveyed on their feelings about how much they ate. It turns out that no matter how much they ate, the people who spent more on their food felt better about their fullness than the people who spent less money did. The people who spent less money had more negative feelings about the experience overall.
The official press release read:
“If you don’t want to experience guilt or feel stuffed after a meal, eat from a higher-priced all-you-can-eat buffet and focus on eating more healthy options instead of trying to ‘eat your money’s worth.”
The researchers suggest that these results are important for a lot of reasons. They are important for people who are setting the prices of food, dieticians, and people who work in marketing as well as the consumer. As a consumer it’s a good thing to keep in mind so you can be aware of that and hopefully get around it somehow.
One way of course to use this to your advantage is to not buy bargain food and the guilt that seems to come associated with it, but that is not always the best option for people who are trying to save money.
But if you are aware of this phenomenon, it might help you out the next time that you do decide to buy food on the cheap. The best way to not feel bad about what you eat is to not eat anything bad, so don’t think that just because you’re getting a cheap buffet that you need to everything in sight. Just because you can that doesn’t mean that you should, and generally you shouldn’t.
Another thing to keep in mind is that just because some food is priced more than doesn’t necessarily mean that it is better food than the cheap food. But if it prevents you from overeating to buy a slightly more expensive of your favorite foods than have at it.
