What to Wear to a New Year’s Party

They say that how you bring in the New Year is how you will spend the rest of the year. So don?t be wearing ugly clothes when the clock strikes twelve. How you dress all comes down to how you?re spending the night, whether it?s a trashy club night or a formal party.

The fancy New Year?s party

This is one of the few times of the year when you?re expected to go all out and wear a suit. Stick to the basics- a black suit with a crisp, light-colored shirt will do the trick. Make sure your suit fits properly to avoid looking awkward. Don?t be tempted to throw on all your jewelry; a watch, a belt, and maybe a gold or silver bracelet is as far as your accessorizing should go. You probably don?t need to wear a tie unless it is quite formal- but you may want to ask the host about the dress code just in case you?re the only guy with a naked neck. A pair of perfectly polished Oxfords will finish off your elegant look.

The low-key party

A relaxed house party on New Year?s Eve is one of the most underrated ways to spend the night. It?s a guaranteed good time. You can also guarantee that most people there will have no idea how to dress. It may be informal, but convention says that you need to dress a little nicer than you would for a regular house party. Even if you?re buddies with everyone there, you have no excuse for not changing out of your track pants. If you?re normally a tee shirt kind of guy, swap it for a collared shirt and pair it with dark jeans. Also, don?t be that guy that wears a stupid hat. Your trilby does not help your casual party outfit.

The dirty club

Going to a trashy nightclub means that you?re going to have to dress to stand out. Understated elegance may do you well at other New Year?s events, but not here. Go for bright colors. A neon tee shirt or collared shirt, paired with some denim on your lower half, is a winning combination. Wear some white in case there are UV lights- a tee shirt with white writing will do the trick. Comfortable shoes that aren?t too ugly, such as canvas shoes, are essential. The key here is to look striking, but be comfortable. Don?t wear your Sunday best; something is bound to get puked on at these types of events.

Outdoor events

An outdoor event means layering is your new best friend. Pair some thick jeans with a shirt and a nice knitted sweater. A sport coat over the top may be in order depending on how chilly it is. Even if it is going to be cold weather, be mindful about where you?re going. If it?s a busy event where half your city is packed in to a small space, you don?t want to suffocate in your heavy winter coat.
