Top Five Movies of Melanie Lynskey
Melanie Lynskey currently stars in ?Seeking a Friend for the End of the World? that you can see in theaters and which I?m sure I?ll see relatively soon. I like Steve Carell, I really like Keira Knightley and a vision of the end of the world always intrigues me. (That?s why ?Melancholia? was easily my favorite movie of 2011.) However, as much as that one excites me, Melanie?s future movie ?The Perks of Being a Wallflower? excites me more.
I?m not too sure how often you?ve walked into a bookstore and picked out a book at random, but it doesn?t happen to me at all. I don?t shop. I figure out what I want and then I go to the store and buy it. Easily said and if you could see me now you?d see me clap my hands and separate them as a hand gesture to signify the same thing. Well, one day I wanted to read something and I had no clue what I wanted to read. The graphic novel section looked boring for once. Classics seemed dated. So, I found a secluded spot in the Barnes and Noble and sat down on a stool. I looked to a shelf below my chair and to my left and scanned the titles. I saw Perks, and figured, well, let me read a few pages. I ended up sitting in that chair for an hour reading. Since then, the book has held a special place in my library heart (different from my movie heart) and since it has been a number of years, I have mostly forgotten the story and I think that I could enjoy both the movie and the book, a rare occurrence for me. Until that moment though, I just have to while away my time with these movies from Melanie.
I don?t care if Melanie is barely in this movie. This is my first chance to put one of my favorite horror movies and favorite movies of the 90s on a list, and I?m darn well going to take it.
Of course, if I include Peter Jackson?s ?The Frighteners,? I have to include ?Heavenly Creatures? as well. It?s a coincidence that this movie ends up 4th on Melanie?s list as well as Kate Winslet?s list. Unfortunately, another of my favorite Peter Jackson movies (?Dead Alive?) will only ever make a list as an aside.
I?ve already listed this movie at #5 for Rosario Dawson and #1 for Chloe Sevigny, so now it averages out to #3 for Melanie. Numeric coincidences abound on this list and it?s almost ?frightenering.? (See what I did there?)
It?s simple as to what makes this movie #2 on the list: the surprise that came to me as I saw Melanie play a mom fresh out of rehab. I didn?t expect that at all and the job she did making me believe she was a crappy mother impressed the heck out of me. I think that?s what excites me most about her future role in ?The Perks of Being a Wallflower.?
A favorite movie of mine without any qualification, the wedding scenes were some of the best in the movie. Getting a glimpse of the background of a guy that doesn?t ever want to settle down plays so very true.
