Must-Read: Build Your Body Like Evan Longoria
So, last Wednesday was a pretty exciting day in baseball, huh? For those of you who didn’t end up seeing the Red Sox blowing their lead to the Orioles while, at the exact same time, the Rays were coming back from 7-0 against the Yankees in order to win in extra innings, guaranteeing their spot in the postseason … well, then you missed the most exciting day in baseball history.
A huge part of that Rays comeback was Evan Longoria, who hit a 3-run home run in the 7th inning to bring his team within a run, and then by hitting one more home run in extra innings, this one a game-winner. It was quite a show he put on. Which is why we’re highlighting this article over at Men’s Health about how Evan Longoria gets the muscles needed to hit the ball over the fence. And hey, maybe you can use these tips for your own workout. You’re not going to hit any home runs to get your team into the MLB postseason, but maybe you can put a few more over the 12-inch softball fence.
Build strength first, then skills
Longoria ignores bats, balls, and gloves during the off-season. “The only thing on my mind is preparing my body for baseball,” he says. The distinction is important: Sports-related skills might be more fun to work on, but if your body isn’t strong and agile, skills training could lead to injuries. That’s why Longoria hits the gym from November through February. Before tackling a new sport, it’s ideal to have a window of four to six weeks so you can prepare your body.
