Whether or not the campaign has actually worked by getting you to drink more Dos Equis (for me, personally, it hasn’t), you can’t argue that the Most Interesting Man in the World ad campaign hasn’t worked by getting their name out there more. Or, at least, made the man playing him (Jonathan Goldsmith) more recognizable. The bit of casting of Goldsmith was perfect. He looks like a weathered man who has lived enough life for dozens of people, someone who would give you some sage advice about what to do with that girl or how to live and you would have no choice but to listen to it. The thing though, is, this isn’t just the character that Goldsmith plays; it’s how Goldsmith himself lives his life.

This great interview over at Men’s Health with Goldsmith takes us through what he believes makes a man interesting, what should be a man’s approach to fashion, and even his take on beards:

A: What?s something specific guys can do to increase their interestingness?

J: Very simply read a good newspaper for starters. And read all the good books that you can. I find that women enjoy men that have a broad periphery of knowledge. Most people, from my vantage point, go through life just watching it like a parade. They live vicariously through other people, and they?re not in it. They?re not participating in their own experience. So I say participate. Branch out. Think out of the box. Do out of the box. Be open.

A: Does a beard automatically make someone more interesting?

J: Well I think it catches people?s eye. It?s quick to identify?you know, the guy with the beard. That?s better than the chick with the beard.
