Must-Read: Why Not To Commit

Have fun. Stay single.

One of the great movies of my upbringing is Cameron Crowe’s “Singles.” And as I get older, this movie just seems to make more and more sense to me, probably because now that I’m near 30 I’ve actually experienced many of the types of events in the movie. It’s real life, people!

One of my favorite parts of the movie is near the beginning when Campbell Scott tells a story about his dad leaving him when he was a young age. For his parting advice, he gave his boy two simple sentences: “Have fun. Stay single.” So true. When you give up your ability to be single, you also give up your ability to have fun. (That might be a bit drastic, sure, but still …)

Well, AskMen.com has a list of the top 10 things that you lose once you forgo your life as a single man and get yourself involved in a heavily-committed relationship. And boy, oh boy, are they a wake up call. For example:

No.3 Your own plans

It?s not selfish to want to safeguard your future plans and have your own dreams. In fact, it?s necessary to have those, even when you?re in a relationship. But once things become more serious with your girl, there is no room for secret gambits; you?ll have to include her in all your ideas for the future.

Which isn’t to say it’s not wise to get in a committed relationship when the right girl comes around. It’s just that you must know you’re sacrificing these other things when you do it. If it’s the right girl, it shouldn’t matter. But be wary if it’s not, because then all of these sacrifices aren’t worth it. Tread carefully, in other words.
