Summer Movies to Look Forward To

With “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” kicking off this year’s summer blockbuster season – quite shittily, by the way – quickly followed by “Star Trek”, “Angels & Demons” and “Terminator: Salvation” next week, it seems like you might as well forgo the theater experience as a date option for the rest of summer since there’s nothing left to look forward to. Not so, folks. Below are another six movies you should be getting hyped for already. (And no, “Transformers 2” is not on this list.)

“Year One”, June 19th

Not entirely sure what to make of this comedic romp through early man – the trailer elicits just a few heavy chuckles here and there – but I’m prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt just because of the people involved: Jack Black, Michael Cera and David Cross all have roles, Harold Ramis manned the directorial chair, and it was produced by the watchful eye of Judd Apatow, his 4,867th movie production in the past five minutes.

“Public Enemies”, July 3rd

Any Michael Mann-directed crime drama is automatically buzz-worthy, but this one features Christian Bale and Johnny Depp, two actors who can currently do no wrong.

“Bruno”, July 10th

Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to “Borat”, if this isn’t ranked number one on your most-anticipated movie of the year list, you might as well start hibernating now so you can wake up in time for winter’s usual slate of boring Holocaust-related Oscar bait.

“Funny People”, July 31st

The latest Judd Apatow movie – even though his name has been attached to every movie in the past three years, this is only his third directorial effort – the trailer makes it seem like he’s turned up the “serious” dial on his “semi-serious comedy” format. You can’t get much more serious than cancer. The early buzz on the movie is that Aziz Ansari steals the show as super raunchy comedian “Randy”, who’s material can be viewed below:

“Inglourious Basterds”, August 21st

Sure, the script sucked. (If you can’t find it online somewhere, you don’t deserve the chance to read it.) But even I have to admit that I’m at least sort of looking forward to Quentin Tarantino’s take on WWII. If only so then I’ll have more ammunition to use when QT fanboys start talking up him being the “greatest director of our generation”.

“Halloween 2”, August 28th

Just kidding. This is going to suck. So, so much.
